Ever since I first posted these pages, people have been asking me, Why hand out so many tricks of the trade?
I’m glad so many of you asked, because the answer is important.
I believe in giving back.
Sounds cheesy, but it’s true, and it really is that simple.
Also, I honestly think it’s in my own best interests.
Working as a script editor is about more than creating or fixing films. It’s about showing people how to make the most of their own creative potential. Teaching comes with the territory.
I feel a deep sense of gratitude to all the people who guided me when I was starting out 20 years ago; and the best way to thank them is to pass on what I have learned.
I do genuinely mean this. I love working with people. I love helping them build strong, engaging, moving, convincing stories. This is a people-orientated business, and working alongside both new and established talent is always a privilege. But since I can’t work with everyone in TV and film directly, I thought I’d give a little back to the industry as a whole. I’d like to think that there are few nuggets here for even the more experienced among us. Because, let’s face it: none of us knows everything.
